What to do around Camden YardsBelieve it or not, there are other things to do in Baltimore besides watching the Baltimore Orioles. There are baseball related activities, such as the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum and Fort McHenry (the birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner). You will also find other activities not related to baseball, such as the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum and the Baltimore Zoo. The following is a sampling of some the activities around Charm City: B&O Railroad Museum The B&O Railroad is not just a stop in Monopoly. This museum honors the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, as well as trains in general. Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum Just a few steps from Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is a great place to see items from great moments in the life and career of Babe Ruth (like the bat from 1927 where he hit a then record 60 home runs), who was born and raised in Baltimore. There are also plenty of artifacts from the history of the Baltimore Orioles (the 1983 World Series trophy is housed here). The Baltimore Poe House and Museum Baltimore's other major league sports team, the Super Bowl Champion Ravens, are named after a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, who grew up in Baltimore and is buried here as well. Baltimore Zoo You will probably see orioles here (as well as penguins, peacocks, and ostriches). This is consistently rated as one of the best "kid zoos" around. Fort McHenry "Oh, say can you see?" This is the birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner. In 1813 here, Francis Scott Key penned the poem that would later be adopted as our National Anthem. Lexington Market See food shopping the way it used to be! You will be amazed by all the various yummy smells here. You will find fresh meat, produce, seafood, baked goods, delicatessen, poultry, salads, and more. It is hard to resist buying something to at least sample. National Aquarium This has been one of the top Baltimore tourist attractions since it opened in 1981. You can see seals, a giant stingray, and all sorts of various fish here. The National Aquarium is one of the great attractions at the Inner Harbor. USS Constellation Another great attraction at the Inner Harbor is the USS Constellation, which is the last "all sail" ship built by the US Navy. Refurbished several years ago, the ship is a great place to take a tour. Washington Monument and Mount Vernon Square You don't have to go to Washington, DC, to see the Washington Monument. This one in Baltimore was the first large scale monument built to our first President. Mount Vernon Square is one of the most scenic spots in all of Baltimore. |
